Mansa Musa was the ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa, around 1312-1337. It is said that his wealth was so vast it is unmeasurably by today's valuation and remains the richest person in history. Mansa Musa left a realm notable for its extent and riches - he built the Great Mosque at Timbuktu but is best remembered for his pilgrimage to Mecca.
